Building a beauty empire -Moshabi Aesthetics
On the business section Carob Magazine Africa talks to the founder and CEO of Moshabi Aesthetics Sewela Mofomadi. We talk to her about her journey to building a successful business.
Carob Magazine Africa: Who is Sewela? Where were you born? How was it like growing up?
Sewela: Sewela is a very ambitious young lady, a go getter…Whatever she puts her mind to she believes she can achieve it.
I was born in Botlokwa in Limpopo. Growing up I used to be a bit over the top…I guess this was an early sign that I would work in the beauty Industry. …I remember this one Christmas we had gone shopping and all I wanted were high heels … I can still picture the shoes clearly in my mind. (Laughs)
Carob Magazine Africa: Have you always had the love for the beauty Industry?
Sewela: Definitely!!! I have always had the love for beauty and art. In my high school years, I owned a sketch book where I used to design dresses, like haute couture …At some point I thought I would become a fashion designer or a top model…It never crossed my mind that I would be doing what I do now…
Carob Magazine Africa: What Made you start Moshabi Make up & Spa? You were quite young when you started your business, take us through the journey of starting this business and what gave you the courage to start…
Sewela: I remember in 2016, I needed a change of scenery, I went to Johannesburg and stayed with my cousin, I looked for employment, I got a 4-month contract job with a particular retail store. At the time I had already developed the love for make-up. With every money that I got from my Salary I would buy things that would contribute towards what I needed to start my make up business. I bought brushes, Foundation and a make-up case, bit by bit I was able to put together the make-up kit that I needed.
During my lunchtime I would go to the storeroom and watch make up video tutorials on YouTube. After my contract ended I went back home in Limpopo. I perfected my art by practicing on my friends. Soon after that I started being called to do wedding make up, I traveled all over Limpopo and at the time it was still challenging as I was using taxis, having to sleep at my client’s homes because most weddings start very early …
What gave me the courage to start? My fear is not greater than my excitement to win, that is one thing that gets me ahead.

Carob Magazine Africa: Did you experience any challenges when you started and if so, what were those challenges? What kept you going during those challenging times?
Sewela: You will meet people who will try and demotivate you, people who will try and break your spirit but keep moving forward because you know what you want.
Carob Magazine Africa: At which point did you realize that Moshabi has made it? Or this is becoming a beauty empire?
Sewela: No no…Ntsako…I can’t say Moshabi has made it, remember when you reach one level, you are not going to settle there, you will want to reach another level that is above that one.
I’m definitely where I dreamt of being 3 years ago but just like they say, the top of one mountain is the bottom of another…I still want to see myself progress further than here… Create even more jobs and impact our society positively.
Carob Magazine Africa: You are doing a lot of training in your business, you’re constantly acquiring new skills, getting more and more equipped, please share with us the importance of upgrading your skill in your business?
Sewela: Clients like to see someone that is constantly learning, they get to trust you more with their faces, hair, bodies etc. Getting equipped is very important because it keeps elevating you as a person as well.
Carob Magazine Africa “You have opened a new branch of Mashabi Interior design “Mosh home decor” what inspired this?
Sewela: I love all things beauty, I love beautiful spaces because they are very therapeutic, also good for your general wellbeing. My love for being in beautiful spaces made me want to start my interior design business, which is still a baby, I’m just patient with it, one day we will get there…
Carob Magazibe Africa: What advice would you give to aspiring business owners about starting their own businesses?
Sewela: Start with what you have, where you are, starting is the most important step…Even if you do suffer setbacks …have a positive mindset…In order for an arrow to be launched, firstly it has to be pulled back and then released. Have this attitude and you will achieve a lot in your business.
